Nintendo's making a new 3DS variant for sale in October. It's a 3DS without the 2D. It's retailing for $130.

It's real too. Here's the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_2DS

I'm not sure what to think about this, but hey, it's Nintendo so it'll probably be good. Don't know how well it'll sell, though.

I heard it was supposed to be an "entry-level" handheld. We'll see how that goes.

Bumping this to say that it's actually a pretty good idea. the 3D on the 3DS is a pretty fun gimmick, but it's not completely necessary for the system. The design of the 2DS is pretty neat, and if I remember correctly it's cheaper than the 3DS moneywise.

Now, how it's going to sell, that's a bit different. Kids will probably not want the 2DS as much as the 3DS, as to a smaller child, the 3D is the coolest part of the system. I, not being a "little" child anymore, wouldn't mind the removal of the 3D, although for some games it'd remove some of the nicer parts of the background or the character design.

Overall, 7/10, pretty cool of Nintendo to try something as brave as removing the gimmick from their machine to try and profit.
